Your Teacher

Terry is a woodturner who lives and works in North London. He has been turning wood for over 40 years, and has a workshop studio filled with the scent of timber, part-finished bowls and the tools needed for his work.

Terry made his first wooden bowl at school. It was a long time ago, but he still has that bowl. Years later, he built his first woodturning lathe out of scrap steel, and with it made his second bowl from a bit of elm. He still has that bowl too. He keeps nails in it, and every time he…

Had an absolutely amazing day, really proud of what I achieved under the amazing instructions from Terry. I would definitely recommend to anyone with a fondness for woodwork. Terry was very knowledgeable, instructive and most of all fun. I hope anyone who goes enjoys it as much as I did.

The woodturning class with Terry was excellent. He was a great teacher and took me through everything from the techniques I'd need to the equipment I could get if I wanted to start. His workshop is a great place to learn and a wonderful environment to spend some time in (along with his cat). Would highly recommend - once I've got a workshop, I think I'll be getting a lathe Cheers Terry!

Great day making a wooden bowl with Terry! So proud of what I achieved and can't believe I did it in 5 hours! Terry has a great teaching style.. He's on hand when you need a little extra help and support, but knows when he can step back and let you take control which is amazing for learning hands on rather than just watching. Good set up too in his workshop in the garden so felt very Covid safe. Thanks Terry - highly recommended and I'm so proud of my bowl!

I spent a really enjoyable afternoon learning the basics of wood turning with Terry Vaughan. I hadn't ever tried wood turning before and was expecting to find it really difficult but Terry is a great teacher giving lots of support to start off with and as my confidence grew standing back a bit to help me learn from doing. At the start of the class he promised I would have a bowl I could sell at the end, didn't really believe him but it's true I think I could sell it if I wanted to. Thanks Terry.

What a wonderful day I had on Terry’s woodturning class. As a beginner I found his one-to-one tuition spread over seven or so hours a great way of learning the basics. I particularly appreciated being thrown in the deep end right from the start, but always under Terry’s watchful eye and expert guidance. The course was remarkably comprehensive covering the basics of bowl turning as well as spindle turning, and Terry thoughtfully answered every question I threw at him. I came away with good practical knowledge and confidence using the lathe and cutting tools, not to mention a beautiful Cherrywood bowl and two Beechwood spinning tops. Thank you Terry!

I really enjoyed the one-to-one woodturning class with Terry. All instructions were clear and after 4 hours of questions, answers, practising, turning and sanding I was able to finish my own wooden bowl with oil and take it with me back home. I experienced a very friendly atmosphere and Terry's dedication to helping me to succeed.

This was a really good course. Terry really knows about bowl turning and is a good, patient teacher. His workshop is well equipped and well lit - there is even a kettle for that all important tea break. The fact that it is a one to one course means you get his undivided attention and can ask every question you might have and he'll notice if you're doing something not quite right and correct you. At the end of the day you go home with a bowl you can be proud of. I would recommend this course.

Absolutely loved Terry's class! We did a two-person woodturning class. We had never woodturned before and Terry was such a great teacher. He was very supportive and patient while also encouraging us to express our own creativity and figure things out on our own whenever possible. The whole experience was so worth it and we went home with such beautiful bowls. We would recommend this to anyone and hope to do it again ourselves soon!

I am a 72-year-old lady with no practical skills whatsoever. A chance encounter with a Youtube video sparked my curiosity about woodturning, as a result of which I've just had a thoroughly enjoyable one-to-one lesson with Terry Vaughan in his well-appointed North London workshop. A master of his craft, Terry really is the best of teachers. He's unflappable, extremely knowledgeable and experienced, and conveys his advice and instruction very clearly. It was thrilling to see a square solid block of wood become, under his gentle and patient guidance, a beautiful little bowl which I shall cherish always. I would love to take this new interest further, and hope to do so in the near future. I can highly recommend one of Terry's lessons. Mine was a greatly rewarding experience and terrific fun.

This was an excellent course that exceeded my expectations. The standard of teaching was very high and it was evident that Terry is a vastly experienced wood turner. Under his supervision I made my first ever bowl, from Sycamore, and it looks just great. His workshop is extremely well equipped and he supplies all the necessary safety gear. This is a completely hands-on course with step by step professional guidance on how to use the lathe, the tool rest, the gouges and scrapers, sander etc. I am now a convert and poised to buy a lathe and start woodturning in my own workshop. I thoroughly recommend this course!
Simon - 3 March 2019
‘What a great afternoon, a beautiful bowl emerged from the piece of cherry wood that we selected together. So nice to be making something. Terry has a great way of teaching, letting the student do the work and make some choices from early on, guiding and correcting only when necessary. An afternoon of mindfulness as I only concentrated on what was in front of me. This is a highly recommended and productive way to spend some time.’

I have booked wood turning class second time with Terry again. This time we worked on a different shape rather than a conventional one. It turned out so good and thank Terry for encouraging me to try my own bowl. I use sycamore, the colour and the veins were perfect. It was a lovely experience. I would like to try again at the first availability.

It was a really fun and informative class. Vaughan was very skilled and kind and the results were superb! I would recommend this to any beginners who want to learn woodworking and woodturning.

I had a wood turning class with Terry Vaughan last Sunday. It was a fantastic workshop. I enjoyed every moment and learned a lot. Terry was so helpful and encouraging while leaving you discover your talent. At the end of the workshop I felt very happy to accomplish turning a very nice teak bowl which I was dreaming for so long. I will definitely recommend to my friends to join one of the courses with Terry and I thank Obby too for this opportunity.
